Golden eagle photos and story by Monte Marsh of Alberta, Canada.
I was hauling a load of pipe to an oil lease in March 2004, by
Woking,
Alberta, in my semi-truck, which happened to be called an "International
Eagle".
There was a moose carcass at the side of the road and some crows were
chasing a golden eagle away from it. It seemed like everything was in slow
motion when the eagle came straight for the truck that I was driving. There
was cars coming so I couldn't move over, so it smashed right through my
window. I was focused on not getting glass in my eyes when it crashed through
my window, I just assumed that it wasn't in the truck. However, it had came
through the window and was by the gear shift and it was still alive and
clenching
its claws and trying to move. I pulled my truck over and when I was
outside of the truck I called 911 on my cell. When I phoned, no one believed
what had happened and they assumed that I was some drunk making a prank call,
but finally a Fish & Wildlife officer came by and blocked the road to get the
golden eagle away safely.
The eagle lived for two days but died of internal injuries. I had to apply
for
a permit to be able to keep the bird. Since the golden eagle is endangered I
had a hard time getting a permit, but they finally released the bird to me. I
sent it to a taxidermist and it took a year to do.
