SIZE: 23 to 27 inches
WINGSPAN: 54 to 60 inches
FEEDING HABITS: Eats mostly carrion at city dumps, slaughterhouses, and along roads for traffic-killed animals. Also kills and eats baby lambs, calves, ducks, herons, and will also eat eggs and rotten fruit on occasion.
IDENTIFICATION: Black overall with white patch on underside of wings at the base of the primary flight feathers. Has short, square tail, as opposed to the turkey vulture's longer, narrower tail, and will have to flap its wings more than a "TV" to maintain altitude.
