Marguerite Alford Flouer
KEENAN — Marguerite Alford Flouer, 97 of Keenan, W.Va., died Aug. 23,
2010 at the Glenwood Retirement Village in Princeton, W.Va., where she
had been residing since 2006.
She was born on April 16, 1913, near Hillsdale, W.Va., the daughter of
H.L. “Tide” and Rose Tomlinson Alford.
Marguerite was a graduate of Union High School and the National Business
College of Roanoke, Va. She worked as a secretary for the law firm of
Haynes and Ford and for Judge Charles Lobban, all of Lewisburg, W.Va. for
nearly 35 years. She was also a member of the Union Presbyterian Church
and was a member of the choir as well as the Women’s Circle. For many
years, she volunteered as a Gray Lady at the former Andrew S. Rowan
Memorial Home and, with her husband, George, organized and assisted with
Red Cross Blood Drives in Union.
Marguerite married George Flouer on Oct. 29,1937, in Wheeling, W.Va. The
couple resided in Lost River State Park where George was Assistant
Superintendent until he entered the U.S., Navy for the duration of World
War II. Both avid naturalists throughout their lives, Marguerite and
George were active in the Brooks Bird Club and were instrumental in the
establishment and maintenance of the Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory on
Peters Mountain.
Marguerite is survived by her children, Jack Flouer and his wife, Peggy
of Manhattan, Kan., Joan Flynn and her husband, H.M. “John” of Tazewell,
Va.; five grandchildren, Michael Flouer of Atlanta, Ga., Christopher
Flouer of Springfield, Mo., Gwyn Flouer Heidrick and her husband, Brad of
Olathe, Kan., Major John Flynn (USMC) and his wife, Riley stationed at
Camp Lejeune, N.C. and Captain Bryan Flynn (USA) and his wife, Meagan of
Ft. Benning, Ga.; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George; four sisters, Mary
Allen, Eva Harris, Snowe Bobbit McCoy, Pauline Handlan Ballowe and one
brother, Hermon Alford.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Union Presbyterian Church with the
Rev. Greg Wood, Pastor, Tazewell Presbyterian Church and the Rev. James
Grant, retired pastor of Tazewell Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow
in the Fairview Cemetery, Keenan, W.Va. The family will receive friends
from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home in Union.
A memorial has been established for the maintenance of the piano at the
Union Presbyterian, P.O. Box 239, Union, WV 24983 in her name.
